The new Coalition Governement has pledged that: "We will introduce measures to make the import or possession of illegal timber in the UK a criminal offence"
Whilst the TTF has supported a prohibition at EU level and this process is to be discussed imminently in early July, Rachel Butler, Head of sustainability at the TTF, adds a note of caution ""The focus and words on timber are welcome but we wouldn’t want the policy to undermine the European process and adversely affect UK trade."
As an update on the EU process Rachel Butler co-ordinated a joint statement with Confor, BWF and WPIF prior to MEPs voting on the Parliament position in early May. This along with co-ordinated lobbying with EU trade federations led to MEPs dismissing the requirement for labeling all timber and agreeing that recycled timber should be exempt from the Due Diligence Regulation.
