Consumers, business, NGOs and governments are all increasingly aware of the importance of responsible timber purchasing. Timber has been shown in numerous studies to be more environmentally friendly than competitor material but it is vital that steps are taken to source timber responsibly from suppliers.

The timber trade encourages responsible forest management and responsible timber purchasing, although it has relatively little influence in management practices in its supplying countries.

Nevertheless, there are a number of fast progressing developments by the European Union, the UK government and the European trade to address unsustainable practices in the world. The Timber Trade Federation is taking a leading role to ensure that timber and timber products have been sourced to the UK market in a responsible way.

There are many initiatives and projects to help achieve this goal involving a range of stakeholders including the private sector, inter-governmental processes and NGOs. The documents below cover these areas by their different themes.
