A natural environment for retail

Combining timber species to create a design statement was a feature of the Barker & Stonehouse furniture retail outlet in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire.

On the outside, Western Red Cedar was used for timber louvres, and inside the store, European Redwood (Pine), machined to a rustic-looking finish, helped to create a relaxing naturalistic environment. Both species are softwoods, procured and produced by TTF Member Arnold Laver.

Western Red Cedar, which machines easily, can sometimes be brittle. For this project, Arnold Laver laminated and finger- jointed the material used for the louvre blades. Western Red Cedar is also ideal for such applications, as it is relatively lightweight. Its natural reddish-brown tones weather with time to a silver-grey. European Redwood is a popular species for evoking a natural ambience, which is well recognised as a key element in promoting the right environment for retail sales.

Timber suppliers like Arnold Laver are often called upon to machine bespoke profiles, in order to achieve the architects’ aesthetic requirements. Advice on timber species and their various machining and workable qualities can be provided by Timber Trade Federation members, whose depth of wood science knowledge stretches to timbers from across the globe.

Arnold Laver has manufacturing facilities at a number of its depots country-wide, able to process both softwoods and hardwoods to architects’ precise needs. Accuracy and efficiency, combined with advanced software, can help to keep project costs related to timber under control.
