An education in profiles

Receiving an ‘Highly Commended’ in the 2016 Royal Society of Ulster Architects for Todd Architects of Belfast, this new teaching block for the Coleraine Campus of the University of Ulster provides a dynamic learning environment for students.

It also acts as a link between new and existing buildings and provides a 250-seat lecture theatre. Imported PEFC-certified Western Red Cedar was chosen for both internal and external cladding.

It was supplied by TTF Member and Responsible Purchaser Brooks Bros, in keeping with the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Brooks Bros worked closely with the architects and contractors throughout to ensure the desired aesthetics were achieved.

Some 10,000 metres of timber was machined by Brooks Bros to five different cladding profiles, some bespoke, some standard, and also machined into louvres, using Brooks Bros’ state-of-the-art machining and finishing facilities.

Two different styles were adopted for the kiln-dried Western Red Cedar. The internal cladding was pre-finished by Brooks Bros with Morrells Omnia internal coating; the external cladding was left to weather naturally to Western Red Cedar’s eventual silver-grey colouring.

Considering the natural durability and potential coated effects of different timber species, along with the visual effects created by using different timber profiles, gives architects a greater range of options when designing and detailing buildings. Timber suppliers like Brooks Bros readily offer their expertise.
