Location

Action Stations

Fell Foot Active Base, a development funded by The National Trust and Sport England, is situated on the edge of Lake Windermere in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Now providing a base for visitors and locals alike, its facilities include a clubhouse, multi-purpose training and conference rooms, boat storage and heated changing facilities.  For visitors exploring the surrounding 43 acres of parkland, it also offers a promenade terrace for enjoying the views. The facilities are being shared with the area’s sailing, rowing and swimming clubs.  Fitting unobtrusively into the natural landscape is an absolute necessity so muf architecture/art chose modified wood Kebony to bring harmony and warmth to the setting, and to provide long-term durability.  In an environment-friendly process, sustainably-grown softwood is modified  with both heat and agricultural by-product furfuryl alchohol to polymerise the wood’s cell walls, resulting in Kebony having  similar dimensional stability and performance to tropical hardwoods.

Smooth surface

Kebony Character Wood was used for the decking, cladding, and facades of the clubhouse. The smooth nature of Kebony is suitable for those walking on the decking in bare feet:  Kebony does not get hot on its surface, even in the height of summer.  The durability of Kebony is also able to cope with the high footfall of the thousands of visitors to the facilities expected every year.
