Following calls from businesses and trade associations the Government extended the Coronavirus Job Retention scheme through until the end of June.

This comes as today the HMRC portal opened for employers to apply for compensation wages paid under the scheme. Think tanks are predicting between seven and 10 million people will be furloughed in the private sector.

A British Chamber of Commerce found two-thirds of British businesses have already using the government’s scheme since it was announced last month, and one in three companies have put at least 75 per cent of their workforce on furlough.

Figures from the TTF’s previous survey, conducted at the beginning of April, found 63% of respondents were accessing the scheme, however the latest survey is expected to reveal even higher figures in the timber industry.
