Fire-retardant treatment: cladding and backing structure

Gelliswick Church in Wales School, completed in 2017 by main contractor Willmott Dixon, combines two local schools with a County Complex Needs Unit, a Flying Start Facility, and shared facilities for local communities in the Milford Haven area.

Lawray Architects and Austin Smith Lord Architects were involved in specifying pre-treated European Redwood cladding, supplied by TTF Member NORclad.

Koppers MicroShades Brunnea treatment was selected, offering a good level of colour stability and a formal warranty for 30 years against rot and fungal decay, on timber used above ground.

Fire retardant treatment was required on this project, for the finished cladding and, importantly, for its backing structure, an area often overlooked in specifications. The fire treatment standard was Euroclass B-s1-d0 (s1 relates to Smoke Production; d0 to Flaming Droplets). NORclad were able to supply both cladding and treatments.

Weight and access for the installation of timber cladding need to be factored in to decisions on the specification of cladding materials and types.

Specialists NORclad produced a board-on-board arrangement to create greater visual depth. Additional detailing in soffitt areas was carried out in a tongue & groove profiled board.

The specifier’s requirements were to keep profile variation to a minimum, NORclad selected two sizes: a larger profile at 25x150mm and smaller at 25x75mm. Consulting Timber Trade Federation members like NORclad on species for cladding, sizes and profiles, and the essential necessities of fire treatment, can give specifiers peace of mind.
