Government releases new information on trading with Northern Ireland

With just 16 days to go until the UK leaves the EU, the Government has published further details on trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. To help our members understand the new trade procedures we are hosting a Members Forum on Friday 18 December, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm. See below for more details.

So far, the Government confirmed in October that there will be due diligence checks on timber flowing from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, but there will be no new due diligence checks from Northern Ireland to Great Britain.

The newly published information advises that businesses trading between Great Britain and Northern Ireland must obtain an XI EORI number and are required to register their company details on the Trader Support Services Portal to complete declarations from the start of 2021.

To help your business facilitate these changes, the Government has provided a new online learning platform, the Northern Ireland Customs & Trade Academy. This provides online training, webinars and ‘how-to’ guides to all those involved in trade between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

Below is also a quick checklist of what you need to do now.

Checklist for NI and GB traders:

  • Both Buyer and Seller should register with TSS
  • Register for both GB EORI and XI EORI numbers
  • Use INCO terms on contracts to clearly define who is responsible
  • Identify the commodity codes and Phytosanitary or CITES certificates required
  • Hauliers must register and work with TSS
  • Follow the operating processes set out by TSS (example below)
  • CE remains the compliance mark for Northern Ireland
  • NI operators must undertake Due Diligence for EUTR

To help members further, TTF is hosting a forum for Members trading with Northern Ireland at 11am on Friday to share information and help provide greater clarity on any outstanding issues. If you are interested, please register HERE. The event is for TTF members only.
