Natural environment for learners

Speed of build, the enhancement of wellbeing in the internal environment, and an ability to achieve wide uninterrupted spans were just some of the reasons for the specification of CLT (cross-laminated timber) for the superstructure of Ickburgh School in the London Borough of Hackney.  CLT’s ability to span wide areas allowed Avanti Architects to create a spacious central atrium area in this school for children with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).  This space, which staff, parents and children can enjoy together, acts as the social centre and cafe for the school community, and leads to the central core of the building housing specialist medical care and services, a sensory room, and a hydrotherapy pool.

The CLT used at Ickburgh School is PEFC certified Austrian spruce which is sourced and manufactured by Stora Enso using formaldehyde-free and environmentally friendly adhesives. The beneficial effect on wellbeing of the very visible presence of wood, and its psychological connection to nature, assisted the ‘home from home’ design philosophy.  The school is largely naturally ventilated and the CLT provides high levels of insulation, giving a relaxed feeling of warmth and richness to the spaces.  The accuracy of build achievable with CLT also contributes beneficially to the air-tightness of the building.

Faster build

The CLT superstructure was engineered and installed by Solid Wood Specialist EURBAN. Use of CLT reduced overall cost and enabled main contractor McLaren to deliver the cut overall construction time by 20%. The production of CLT by Stora Enso is a fully BIM orientated process. Panels are modelled through the BIM platform and sent directly to the CNC machine at the CLT mill where they are cut to size. This precision engineering ensures accuracy and reduces the need for remedial work or changes on site.
