Leading timber importer discusses Brexit impacts with MP

Roofing batten importer SR Timber was amongst a group of leading business figures including Confederation of British Industry (CBI) representatives who outlined the stark difficulties  and impacts surrounding the current Brexit impasse.

SR Timber’s Trading Director Shaun Revill revealed the constant questions he receives from suppliers in the Baltic states asking what is happening in the UK, which represents one of the largest markets for Baltic timber roofing battens.

“There are rumours swirling around Europe that the UK will grind to a halt in the days and weeks after Brexit—and this is making our suppliers understandably very nervous,” Shaun Revill said.

The group also discussed the costs of storing and distributing materials once they arrive in the UK, and the effects of Sterling’s fall against other currencies in terms of imported products.

Mr Revill also highlighted the issue of common standards, and the rise in the number of roofing contractors using battens that are non-compliant with British Standards:

The reality is that they’re not as robust as they should be,” Shaun Revill adds. “British Standards have been developed for specific reasons, such as the quality of materials, and they should be adhered to, Brexit or no Brexit.”
