Location

Winner of the Education & Public Sector category in the 2017 Wood AwardsMaggie’s Centre in Oldham offers those going through cancer a welcoming warmth and an opportunity to enjoy a more natural environment in which to discuss their prospects and problems, and to find new strengths to cope with their challenges.

American Tulipwood was used extensively for both the building fabric, in the form of Tulipwood hardwood CLT panels, developed during the project, and in thermally-modified form for the exterior cladding, supplied by TTF Member, Morgan Timber.

Experience counts in achieving the architects’ aims: Morgan Timber was able to machine custom-fluted cladding from the thermally-modified American Tulipwood – a first for the UK. The heat modification somewhat changes the colour to a darker brown, but the careful detailing brings out the wood’s full aesthetic charm, emphasising its natural variegation.

Applying thermal modification to suitable timbers increases the species choice, and thus the range of aesthetic options, for architects and designers. The Tulipwood was heated in an oxygen-free environment to a high temperature, permanently altering the chemical and physical properties of the wood.

The treatment improved dimensional stability and resistance to decay in the Tulipwood, which is normally only used for internal detailing. The experience and advice of companies such as Morgan Timber, working with the American Hardwood Export Council, is invaluable to specifiers.
