Location

One world, many colours

Creating an ambience to reflect a ‘one world’ philosophy poses interesting aesthetic challenges, given the colourful cultural differences around the globe.  As part of its six-month transformation project, the designer and owner of the One World Café in Torquay wanted to source internal timber cladding with a good environmental provenance but which offered colour options suitable to the vivacious atmosphere he planned to create.  Traditional Oak or Cedar cladding did not offer the opportunities for creativity that the café’s ethos, specialising in global sounds, food and cocktails, demanded.

With 15 different colourways and a waxed, water-repellent and essentially self-cleaning surface, IRO timber cladding from BSW was chosen to fulfil the brief.  Charcoal, Driftwood, Sunflower and Sunset IRO shades were chosen to create a large feature wall.  IRO Charcoal cladding was also used in one of the seating areas and Lagoon coloured cladding was used behind the bar.

No hazardous substances

IRO cladding and decking are inspired by the ancient Japanese ‘yakisugi’ process of wood charring, historically used to protect wood from fungal decay in Japan’s humid climate.  IRO Timber’s durability is enhanced using heat which alters the cell structure on the timber’s surface, ensuring a longer-lasting product.  IRO Timber is HVOC-free and represents a natural timber alternative to wood-plastic composites for those who do not want to use plastics in construction.
