Chorus of approval for modified decking

Working against a backdrop of historic buildings in London’s Covent Garden, the redevelopment of the Royal Opera House’s exterior terrace and upper floor required a low maintenance surface capable of performing in all weathers, yet sympathetic to the historic situation.

Stanton Williams Architects selected Kebony, a modified form of softwood with performance enhanced at cellular level. Kebony is imported to the UK from Europe exclusively by TTF Member Brooks Brothers.

The Kebony surface is multi-purpose. For the Royal Opera House development, it needs to function primarily as restaurant flooring, but also to be adaptable for use as an open air dance studio. Installed by specialists Alfresco Floors, the 600sq/m Kebony decking area is highly resistant to wear & tear and also to weathering in the partially outdoor environment. Over time the Kebony decking will weather from its original brown tones to silver grey, further enhancing the aesthetic.

Kebony, which is suitable for cladding as well as decking, requires no additional maintenance beyond normal cleaning. This helps developers with whole life building costs. Kebony is produced by modifying sustainably-grown softwoods. Heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol, which is an agricultural by-product, effectively polymerises the wood cell walls, giving the resulting hardened material some of the attributes and durability normally associated with tropical hardwoods. Kebony is produced in Clear or Character grades from FSC® certified softwoods.
