Accoya welcomes the public to an icy experience

Slough Ice Arena

Location:     Slough Ice Arena, Middlesex

Architects:   GT3 Architects

Construction:   Morgan Sindall

Wood Supplier:     Accsys Technology

Wood Species:     Accoya

Accoya is produced by TTF Member Accsys Technologies at its plant in Arnhem, Netherlands. Accoya is one of the few timber-based materials to have achieved Cradle to Cradle (C2C) lifecycle certification: it can be safely recycled at the end of its extended life. The timber used to make Accoya comes from sustainable, renewable forests across Europe, certified under the FSC® and PEFC™ systems.

As a TTF Responsible Purchaser, Accsys Technologies undertakes strict due diligence on its timber supplies, and this is audited annually.

Location

The refurbishment of Slough Ice Arena was part of Slough Borough Council’s partnership with Morgan Sindall Investments to renew and regenerate this urban area of Middlesex. The extensive re-modelling by Morgan Sindall and GT3 Architects now provides additional facilities to help Slough residents become and remain more active. Renovation of the Arena’s facade demanded timber cladding with an extended service life, thus reducing on-going costs for the Council.

Accoya® modified wood represented continuing value given its 50 year guaranteed service life when used above ground. Although Accoya needs no additional preservative treatment, three colours of Sikkens tints in light, medium and dark oak, were applied to augment the natural aesthetic of the timber. Accoya’s inbuilt longevity means that coatings last twice as long, reducing further any potential maintenance costs. Three widths of Accoya were also used to vary the visual appeal.

The acetylation process which creates Accoya wood reduces the timber’s natural tendency to expand and contract, especially when used externally. With timber cladding panels, such as those used on the exterior walls of the Slough Ice Arena, dimensional stability is key to obtaining a well fitting, long-lasting installation. Accoya’s dimensional stability and longevity offer public authorities a low maintenance, cost-saving option when refurbishing buildings. Its environmental credentials, and its non-toxic manufacturing process, also chime with authorities’ sustainability agendas.
