Strong and stable for speedy cyclists
We tend to think of high performance cycling in terms of athlete training, mechanisms for improving bike performance, and cycling gear. Speed is also reliant on the track surface.
Designed by Ron Webb and his team, the London 2012 Olympic Velodrome track was created to be the world’s fastest cycling track. The geometry of the track was tailored, and the ambient temperature and still environmental conditions inside the venue were calculated to create the conditions for potentially record-breaking rides.
Timber Trade Federation member Arnold Laver sourced and machined Siberian pine for the track surface, supplying a total of 56 kilometres of finished material. The timber was delivered and allowed to acclimatise to conditions inside the venue for months prior to being laid for the Olympics.
Legally sourced from certified, well- managed forests, Siberian Pine is durable and yet malleable, making it ideally suited to the required application. Ensuring that the most beneficial timber species is supplied can make a difference to the overall outcome of a project.
Timber suppliers like Arnold Laver, approaching its 100th anniversary, have a wealth of expertise which specifiers can draw upon. In the case of the London 2012 Olympic Velodrome track,
Arnold Laver supplied boards made from a little used species of pine, Pinus sibirica, which grows amidst the permafrost of Northern Russia. Sourced from certified, legal and responsibly-managed forests, the species was selected for its straight growth, durability, and because it is not prone to excessive movement, apart from minimal initial cross-grain shrinkage.
Holding both Forest Stewardship Council® and PEFC™ chain of custody certification, 95% of Arnold Laver‘s purchasing in 2017 was certified under these two key responsible sourcing schemes.
The company undertakes exacting due diligence on sourcing, as is required under the Timber Trade Federation Responsible Purchasing Policy, to which all members must adheree. It is also committed to the Federation’s Forests Forever campaign. Arnold Laver has built its reputation for responsible purchasing over many years, its environmental policy being available to all via its website.
