Making the most of this sunny canal-side location, architects Cullinan Studios converted an original 19th century warehouse office building into a low-energy workspace for their practice, combined with 12 two-bedroom apartments in the other half of the building, which is situated on a south-facing stretch of London’s Regent’s Canal.
Falkus Joinery were called upon to provide their expertise with wood in creating timber privacy screens, bespoke stairs and balustrades, fitted kitchens, wardrobes and vanity units, and other elements of the interiors. Using the right timber species for the right application is part of Falkus Joinery’s skill. As an example, the Joinery installed a solid Sapele fire-rated ceiling in the communal areas and used Cedar for the external privacy screens. Solid French Oak was used for the bespoke floating staircases and tall balustrading, while plywood with a veneered French Oak surface, stained a dark brown to give the look of Wenge African hardwood, was utilised in the fitted kitchens.
The building was designed to EcoHomes ‘Very Good’ standard during its planning. The sliding windows and their screens allow residents to passively control the internal environment; the thermal envelope was designed for maximum efficiency, and a ground source heat pump fulfils the renewable requirement.
