TimberWorks case studies are published by the Timber Trade Federation, as part of its mission to grow the use of wood. The Federation’s Responsible Purchasing Policy, to which all its members must adhere, has been recognised widely for its rigour and independent audits. Procuring wood products from a TTF member thus represents ‘Timber you can Trust’. The Federation also drives continuous improvement, such as its actions to promote accurate product descriptions for plywoods, treated timber products, timber cladding and flooring. A preference for the use of timber from a sustainability perspective is part of the design ethic at Yard Architects. The timbers used to create this extended area of a family home in Camden, London, were specified for strength and species but also for their ready availability at builders’ merchants, offering economies to the budget, further augmented by the lack of wet trades needed for finishing. Building contractors are also familiar with wood, speeding up the build.
The timber frame provided a ‘working wall’ for the family’s storage needs and allowed the wall and roof to flow as one through the space. The entirety of the tmber-framed extension, which included a window seat, received a white oiled finish, cohesively tying elements together.
