TimberWorks case studies are published by the Timber Trade Federation, as part of its mission to grow the use of wood. The Federation’s Responsible Purchasing Policy, to which all its members must adhere, has been recognised widely for its rigour and independent audits. Procuring wood products from a TTF member thus represents ‘Timber you can Trust’. The Federation also drives continuous improvement, such as its actions to promote accurate product descriptions for plywoods, treated timber products, timber cladding and flooring. Look for the TTF Responsible Purchasing logo and find a member here.

Understanding timber and using it effectively is about more than technicalities. Douglas Fir was chosen for this London extension by Cooke Fawcett Architects not merely for its structural strength but also for its lively grain and warmth of its aesthetic, resulting in an engaging internal space. The use of Douglas Fir denotes the new spaces and is continued through into the kitchen units, shelves and cupboards. The joists also act as a light diffuser and privacy screen from adjacent homes.
Careful specification of the timbers ensured the desired quality, along with advanced ordering with the contractor to source suitable joists. Junctions with adjoining materials were controlled to avoid cracking. Oak flooring in the dining area added to the softer, yet high quality finish.
