Wood Awards 2019: Shortlisted for Education & Public Sector

Maggie’s is an independent charity that provides cancer support through workshops, courses, one-to-one and group support, as well as a unique and deliberate focus on their buildings design. They believe that by creating a building that brings light, colour and a connection to nature can help people feel better and calmer. This is showcased with the building’s timber structure, created from wood supplied by TTF member James Latham Timber.

The use of Austrian and American Douglas Fir takes the visitor on a journey from the bleakness of the carpark, through an intimate courtyard garden, into a range of calm and contemplative spaces. The building’s silhouette echoes the shapes of the local mountains, while the rusty, wrinkly steel cladding is the colour of the bracken that adorns the hills.

The interior spaces are formed between Douglas Fir-lined walls, which have a warmth and softness, and contrast with the sleek polished concrete floor. At the heart of the building is the ‘cwtch’ – a tall and intimate roof-lit space, inspired by the ‘simnau fawr’ (big chimneys) of vernacular Welsh architecture.

In Welsh homes, the ‘cwtch’ might be the cupboard under the stairs which every house has and where every child may have hidden. Like a Maggie’s Centre, it describes a feeling of safety.
