Founded by King George IV in the 1800’s, King’s College Wimbledon School has transformed their music school into a sustainable building, designed to reduce its embodied carbon by using American White Oak and Douglas Fir. Supplied by TTF members Brook Brothers and Triesse Holdings Ltd and the joinery crafted by Décor Solutions, these species have created a natural aesthetic that brings in light and makes the rooms feel larger with their pale colours.
The auditorium and rehearsal room roofs use an expressed high-tolerance diagrid structure, comprising a visible lamella of American White Oak bonded to spruce glulam beams. Matching veneered solid triangular panels infill the diagrid and flitched Oak ceiling structure. In the auditorium, a series of Douglas Fir vertical bay windows provide lateral glimpses back to other buildings in the school. The main foyer features veneered ceiling panels and an Oak boarded bar, doors and stairs.
