Growing the Use of Wood

TimberWorks case studies are published by the Timber Trade Federation, as part of its mission to grow the use of wood.  The Federation’s Responsible Purchasing Policy, to which all its members must adhere, has been recognised widely for its rigour and independent audits.  Procuring wood products from a TTF member thus represents ‘Timber you can Trust’.  The Federation also drives continuous improvement, such as its actions to promote accurate product descriptions for plywoods, treated timber products, timber cladding and flooring.  Look for the TTF Responsible Purchasing logo and find a member here.

Local Oak for Wood Farm

Sustainable materials, in keeping with the rural Suffolk setting, were chosen by Studio RHE Architects for the creation of Wood Farm, an uncompromisingly modern design with high sustainability standards, sympathetically rendered to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape of barns and farmland.

Glulam timbers form the skeleton of the building, purchased from standard stocks but adjusted to suit onsite.  The beams were purposefully left exposed to add to the rural yet modern aesthetic.  Locally-sourced green Oak beams were used in the kitchen and garage. Local Oak was also used to line the walls and ceilings of the reception rooms and bedrooms, and was finished with a lime wash.  Locally-sourced timber cladding was treated to match the colouration of the zinc used for the roof.

Utilising existing buildings, the project was also able to incorporate homes for wildlife including owls’ and swallows’ nests and bat boxes.  The swimming pool is filled from a natural spring, and many renewable heating and energy technologies, including high-efficiency wood-burning stoves, complete Wood Farm’s long-term contribution to sustainable living.
